Department
On May 30, 2007 an explosion and fire began in
a nail salon in Hillsdale when the victim had spilled acetone while
cleaning nail polish bottles. The victim had spilled the acetone, slipped
and fell and her cloths became saturated. The acetone ran near a furnace
pilot igniting the acetone, causing her clothes to catch on fire. William
Haffler of the Westwood Fire Department lives upstairs from the salon and
came immediately to the aid of the victim with a fire extinguisher. Mr.
Haffler suffered from smoke inhalation and refused medical assistance.

These six members of the Westwood Fire
Department traveled to Lakeview, Louisiana to assist members of the New
Orleans Fire Department to rebuild their firehouse. Engine Company 18's
headquarters was devastated after Hurricane Katrina. Money was raised
independent of the Fire Department and these six members flew down to work
for seven days to help rebuild their firehouse. Additional money was also
raised by the WFD and sent to Engine 18. The WFD and Engine Company 18 in
New Orleans has formed a brotherhood that no disaster could destroy.
