August 2006 hazmat incident at pvh
8/12/06 - At 08:31 hours the WFD responded to a report of an unidentified odor at Pascack Valley Hospital. Fire crews assisted with evacuation and identifying the source of the odor. It was determined that a valve had burst on a water circulating line releasing water containing a rust inhibitor which caused the odor throughout the building. No injuries were reported. Victor Butterfield Jr. 1918-2006
8/5/06 - Ex-Chief Victor Butterfield Jr. passed away on August 1, 2006. “Vic” was the longest-serving active member in the history of the Westwood Fire Department. Admitted to Continental Hose Company No. 1 in 1941 and confirmed by the Mayor and Council in January of 1942, Vic served as an active member until his death.
Victor Butterfield became an Exempt Fireman in 1950, rose through the ranks and became Chief of Department in 1960. As was remarked in the eulogy of his funeral mass, Vic’s life was one of “service” to his family, friends, the WFD, and his country.
Joining the Army in November of 1942, Vic served as a Sergeant with the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, the Ardennes and Germany until November of 1945. Victor Butterfield was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Expert Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Distinguished Unit Badge with Cluster for his service to our country in World War II.
Vic will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
