WESTWOOD -- Combustibles stored too close to a boiler and water
heater caused a fire that heavily damaged a two-family house over the
weekend, officials said.
Investigators ruled the fire at 322 Westwood Ave. was accidental. It
apparently was caused by the ignition of furniture, bedding, and
cardboard boxes placed close to a gas-fired furnace and water heater,
police Lt. Robert Smith said.
The fire, reported about 9 p.m. Saturday, spread to the roof of the
house.
Both apartments were occupied, but residents escaped without injury,
Smith said. The building was condemned.
