WFD Announces 2010 Community Service Scholarship Print E-mail

The Westwood Volunteer Fire Department is pleased to announce our annual Community Service Scholarship Program for the college academic year beginning September 2010.  The program provides up to four (4) scholarship awards, totaling no more than $2,000 each year.  Each scholarship award is paid directly to the student to be applied toward such items as tuition, room and board, fees and books.

Applicants must be a resident of the Borough of Westwood, a current High School Senior, apply and file the appropriate admission application forms at any college that he/she may be interested in attending, and each Scholarship winner must present an acceptance letter to an accredited college or university in order to collect the award.  All applicants must complete the Westwood Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship Application, verify a record of volunteer service to the citizens of the Borough of Westwood (NJ) with a letter from the community organization where you volunteered certifying your service and the approximate number of hours of volunteer service you provided during the past year, and write an essay (~500 words) explaining how your volunteer service to the Citizens of Westwood has affected your life.

The Westwood Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship Committee administers the scholarship program.  A separate Scholarship Review Committee comprised of leaders of area volunteer organizations reviews the scholarship applications, requests additional information and recommends candidates to receive the awards.  The scholarship program is based on scholastic achievement, extra-curricular activities, and community service and is not decided based on financial need.

Eligible applicants are encouraged to visit our website at www.westwoodfirenj.com to download our Application Packet.  The deadline for submitting all information required is February 15.  Applicants are encouraged to apply earlier in order to allow time to promptly complete any additional documentation that may be requested by the Scholarship Committee, as there will be no exceptions to the final deadline of February 15.
