The Westwood Fire Department responded to 180 calls in the first 6 months of 2010. The calls have been broken down in the table that follows. The members of the WFD put in over 1,860 staff hours on those calls. “Staff Hours” are calculated by multiplying the number of responding firefighters by the total time of the call. On average, about 22 firefighters respond to each call.

Here is a break-down of the type of calls in each category. Types are listed in random order.

Fire: building fires, chimney fire, cooking fires, dumpster fires

Hazard, No fire: gasoline spill, gas leak, arcing electrical equipment, building collapse, helicopter stand-by, downed power line

Service Call: water leak, police assist

Other Dispatch: odor of smoke, cancel enroute

Other Alarms: alarm system malfunction, unknown smoke detector activation, unknown CO alarm activation
