WESTWOOD — A new Ford Crown Victoria police car was destroyed in a
strange fire Wednesday morning, officials said.
"It's totaled," said Borough Administrator Bob Hoffmann. "Nobody was
hurt, and no houses were damaged."
Nobody knows the origins of the fire, he said. It is still under
investigation, according to officials.
The car was being used around 10 a.m. to make an arrest at a house on
Sand Road, which is very narrow with many leaves. The officers went into
the house and when they returned outside, they saw the car on fire.
"It could have been something as simple as leaves on the muffler,"
Hoffmann said. "I don't think someone started it."
The car is worth $28,000 and all the ruined equipment — such as the
radios, light bars and computer — was worth at least another $4,000, he
said.
Hoffmann said there was an upside. "Nobody was hurt," he said. "That's
the main thing."
