RIVER VALE — A firefighter sustained minor injuries Saturday battling an
Oakland Avenue house fire that displaced a family of four, police said.
The blaze was reported around 1:45 p.m. and required the River Vale Fire
Department to call for assistance from neighboring communities,
including Westwood, Emerson and Old Tappan. The fire was put out in
about 20 minutes, police said.
The injured firefighter, a member of the Westwood Fire Department, was
treated at the scene after falling down a stairway inside the structure,
but refused further medical treatment, police said.
The fire was primarily contained to the first-floor kitchen, but the
house sustained heavy smoke and water damage, officials said. The family
made arrangements to stay with relatives, police said.
The fire is being investigated, but police said it does not appear
suspicious.
