WESTWOOD -- A house fire Friday on Third Avenue left several
families temporarily homeless.
Once the smoke clears from the multiple-family house, the residents should
be able to move back in, said Fire Chief Rick Woods. "They'll probably
only be out for a night or two," Woods said.
The fire began around 10 a.m., several hours after a contractor had been
using a torch for roof repairs, Woods said. "We think maybe a spark got
under the siding of the house," he said.
Although the 30 firefighters from Westwood, Emerson, and Hillsdale had the
flames extinguished within 30 minutes, there was some smoke damage to the
basement, first floor, and attic, Woods said.
